The Sunset Cocktail Lounge of West Palm Beach, Florida opened on the rooftop of an auto body shop in 1926 and was a lively jazz club (Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie all played there). During segregation, it was a refuge for black musicians and performers who weren’t allowed in the white resorts of Palm Beach.
After the club closed, the building was converted into apartments with a bar downstairs. In 2015, the City of West Palm Beach purchased the building with plans to redevelop the neighborhood and revive it as a jazz destination.
The formerly mint green and pink building has since been repainted blue and yellow.
